Sex Pistols and the Punk Movement

By D Mondal

When you hear the band name the Sex Pistols, you should automatically equate this name to the Punk Movement. They transformed the way people made music during this time period and continue to be an everlasting inspiration for all musicians of the genre. There will never be a group as influential as them on the punk scene. So where did they come from? What did they do? Why are the Sex Pistols different from any other band out there? Let us tell you why.

It all started in 1975 in England when the Sex Pistols came together. The lads included Johnny Rotten as the lead vocalist, Steve Jones as the lead guitarist, Paul Cook as the drummer and Glen Matlock. However, the latter was replaced by the legendary Sid Vicious in 1977. These men formed punk legends. Despite their short history and only one studio album with four released singles, no one had ever experienced the wrath that the Sex Pistols delivered everywhere they went. They were highly polemic and maybe that was their first step to becoming punk legends. You have to be bad to be punk and get away with it and they certainly did.

Protestors and police often showed up at their shows and the band, well, they really couldn't care less. In terms of cultural influence the Sex Pistols are synonymous with the Punk Movement. They were not the first punk band but they certainly were the ones who did it the best and gave way to introducing punk to the entire world. Even in their older age, they continue to portray their punk, carrying out whatever they like. When they were inducted into the prestigious Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, they disgracefully declined basically commenting that it was all rubbish. The Sex Pistols are undeniably the most transformational and ingenious group to come out of the 70s music era.

Time has no relevance for the Sex Pistols. Their fame and familiarity would give one the impression that this band has been around for decades and has never ceased to make music. However, it is quite the contrary. The group was only together for a short time and released a limited amount of music. Only until recently in the early 2000s did they come back together to do a few shows. Nevertheless, the group changed the music scene for all music. Their lyrics were highly rebellious, challenging the socio-political confines of the time period and demonstrated that with enough passion anyone could make it on the music scene..
