MLM - Network-Marketing: What Is It and When Did It Start

By Sean Breslin

MLM and networking known as Network-Marketing, are ways of earning money, especially online. You can start an MLM business with no previous experience in a surprisingly short time through the simple rule of supply and demand of an MLM company product.

This is a popular business model for thousands of people all over the world. If you are interested in joining an MLM company to make money and as a way to work from home, just do a search on one of the search engines and you will find more than enough information to get you started.

MLM network-marketing works in a simple, but effective way. It was the California Vitamin Company back in 1945 that started it all. The company soon became Nutrilite and they started allowing distributors with a minimum of 25 customers to recruit new distributors. They could also earn a commission of 3% from all the sales of distributors below them, hence the multi-level part.

As the vitamins the MLM company sold were regularly re-ordered by each customer, the earnings distributors gained from people lower down in the company were regular and ongoing.

This is the basic attraction of a good MLM and networking business. You can achieve a good income level on an ongoing basis from work you do initially just once. You can of course make more money by employing proven lead generation strategies that attract more new distributors, which in turn will mean an increase in your multiple streams of income.

There are many usable multi-level compensation marketing plans proven to work well with MLM network-marketing, and there are also many different kinds of product or service being offered.

Multi-level marketing, to be fair, has occasionally had some bad press over the years. It isn't usually the marketing plans per se that are targeted, but rather individual MLM and networking companies who are behaving badly. This happens in single-level marketing, the kind of straightforward marketing associated with most companies, as well. Think of Enron, for example.

The company was named America's Most Innovative Company by Fortune magazine for six straight years before the accounting fraud scandal broke. That doesn't mean that all businesses are bad in the single-level marketing world, just because some companies are, and the same rule applies in the MLM and networking world too.

Well-known MLM network-marketing companies include names like Amway and Herbalife. Between them they have been going for over 80 years. However, Avon is perhaps a better known household name. They have been involved in multi-level compensation marketing for over 125 years. Several generations of women have bought their household brand products. They have a deep market penetration, they are trusted and they offer a work from home option for many.

MLM and networking requires no previous experience. Usually training will be given by the company of your choice. Additionally, there are plenty of MLM books to read that lay out the basics you need to understand. The world of multi-level marketing is wide open to all. MLM and networking is likely to be around for a long time to come.
